Hyperbaric medicine has been part of mainstream medical practice in Canada and the United States for more than fifty years. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) recognizes a defined set of indications for which the evidence base is strong enough to be considered standard of care. In Ontario, OHIP funds these indications when patients meet clinical criteria. Evolve is an OHIP-approved provider treating 9 of these conditions across our Ontario clinics.
Despite this, access to HBOT in Ontario was severely constrained. Hospital-based hyperbaric programs were concentrated in a handful of academic centres. Waiting lists were long. Many patients — particularly those with chronic radiation injury after cancer treatment, diabetic foot ulcers that were not healing despite optimal wound care, or sudden sensorineural hearing loss in the narrow treatment window — were either unable to access HBOT at all, or were referred outside the province at significant cost.
Our founders, all practicing Ontario physicians, kept encountering this gap in their own clinical practices. The treatment was indicated, the evidence supported it, the funding existed — and yet the infrastructure was missing.
